ADMISSIONS

Is admission open for freshman and transfers at any semester?
Yes.

Does Kilian offer Remedial or Developmental Studies?
Yes.  In fact we have a terrific Math program for those students that may struggle with meeting their programs math requirement.  Not only do we offer classes to build the student’s knowledge of math from the bottom up, we also offer free tutoring to students for all classes.  Other developmental or pre-college classes offered are English and computer skills.

How will the college evaluate or use two or more sets of SAT/ACT scores?
Kilian does not take SAT or ACT scores into consideration for acceptance.

Will the college accept the General Education Diploma (GED)?
Yes.

Are high school honors courses weighted in favor of the grade point average and what is the minimum GPA?
No. Kilian is open enrollment, a student’s high school GPA is not taken into consideration for acceptance.

Must a prescribed curriculum be completed in high school?
No.

Must a physical examination be submitted prior to admission?
No.

Is an interview, references or essay required for admission?
No.

Does the college require a minimum SAT/ACT for admission?
No.

What credentials must be submitted to properly file an application?
Students must submit the following:
A completed application
$25 application fee
Official High School or GED Transcripts
Official College Transcripts if applicable
COMPASS Scores

What is the average Fall enrollment?
The average fall enrollment is about 400 students.

Is an application fee required and if so, how much?
The application fee is $25.  Students can pay using cash, check, money order or credit card.  Mail payments to Kilian Community College, Attn: Admissions, 300 East 6th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57103 or if you would like to pay over the phone using a credit card call 605-221-3100 and speak with admissions.

How long does it take to process an application and when will the acceptance letter be mailed?
Kilian has open enrollment, so the length of time spent on the admissions process is up to the student. Once the admissions process is complete an acceptance letter is sent to the student.

Is there an application deadline?
Because Kilian is on an accelerated semester schedule we do not have deadlines for applying.  However, if the application process is not complete by the first day of classes students will have to wait to start school the following semester.


ACADEMICS

What major agencies accredit the college?
Kilian Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Will Ds transfer in from another college?
No.  C is the minimum grade for transfer credits.

How many courses are considered a full load?
A full time student at Kilian is registered for 12 credits or more per semester.

Will the college honor AP (Advanced Placement) or CLEP and if so, what are the minimum scores to receive credit?
A maximum of 18 semester credit hours of non-collegiate credits may be earned.  The following opportunities for credit are available.  For further information, please contact the Registrar’s office. Students may receive credit for successfully completing a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) subject examination. Credit may be granted for professional workshop experience as approved by the Registrar. Credit may be granted for military education as approved by the Registrar and/or SOC and ACE guidelines. Credit may be granted for ACE (American Council on Education) experience as approved by the Registrar and/or the Service Members Opportunity (SOC) Agreement.

How many majors and degrees are offered?
We offer 22 different Associate Degrees and 3 certificate programs.

What is the core curriculum or general education requirements?
All degree programs at Kilian include a liberal arts foundation of general education courses from the following disciplines:  communication, humanities, social sciences, computer science, math and academic development.  Kilian offers an AA, AS or AAS degree. An Associate of Arts Degree (AA) provides a foundation of general education courses.  Students complete 46 required semester credits and 18 elective credits.  An Associate of Science Degree (AS) includes 28-37 semester credits of general education courses.  The remaining credits are specific to the core of the concentration area.  An Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) includes 18-36 semester credits of general education courses.  The remaining credits are specific to the core of the concentration area.


STUDENT LIFE

Does Kilian offer on campus housing?
No.  You may check with our Admissions office for a list of rentals in the Sioux Falls community.

What student organizations are active on campus?
Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of the two year college is very active on the Kilian campus.  In addition, SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) is active.


FINANCIAL AID AND EXPENSES

What is the refund policy?
Please review this policy in the College Catalog which is available online.

Will the college accept a credit card?
We accept MasterCard, Visa, and Discover.

Will the college bill me for tuition and fees and when is payment due?
It is the policy of Kilian Community College that all students:
Pay tuition and fees before the end of the first week of class, OR
Provide verification of financial assistance (financial aid, vocational rehab, veteran’s benefits, etc.), OR
Establish a payment plan with the Business Office.

Students failing to meet these requirements by the end of the first week of class will be administratively withdrawn from their class schedule.  Any questions about this policy should be directed to the Business Office.

What scholarships may be available for my situation?
Visit the Financial Aid section of this website to review a list of available scholarships.  In addition, you are encouraged to search for other available scholarships.  Some good search options are:  www.fastweb.comwww.finaid.org/scholarships/unusual.phtml andwww.collegenet.com/mach25.  Use caution when searching for scholarships.  Remember:  You should never have to pay for scholarship information!

How do I apply for financial aid?
Apply for admission through the Kilian Community College Admissions Office.  Students must apply for admission and submit the $25 application fee before financial aid can be awarded. Enroll in an eligible program leading to a degree or professional certificate. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which may be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  The Kilian Community College Code Number is 015000.

Are jobs available on campus?
Kilian participates in the Federal Work Study program which provides part time employment for students who demonstrate financial need based on FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) results.  Students should contact the Director of Financial Aid to see if they qualify.

Does out of state tuition apply?
No.  All Kilian students pay the same tuition rate regardless of their state of residence.

What are current expenses for tuition, room, board and fees?
Tution for Fall 2011 is $262.00 per credit hour.  Book costs vary by class and credits.  Students should budget for a minimum of $150.00 per class for books.  There is a per-semester Institutional Support Fee of $110.00.  Kilian does not have on-campus housing.

GENERAL COLLEGE QUESTIONS

What attractions are within reasonable distance to the college?
Kilian is located in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls in the growing arts district east of the Big Sioux River.  Students can enjoy a relaxing envrionment on campus or take a stroll through various shops or museums downtown.  We’re convenient, easy to access and right in the middle of the action!

What is the minority enrollment?
What is the ratio of males and females?  The average age of Kilian’s students is 28.  Females make up the majority of our students at 69.5%.  Kilian is wonderfully diverse with a minority population of 23%.

What year was the college founded?
Kilian was founded in 1977.

How many buildings are located on campus?
Kilian conveniently offers its classes in one building.
