Disability Services

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, no qualified person will be denied access to, participation in, or the benefits of, any program or activity operated by Kilian Community College because of disability.

Student Disability Services

Kilian Community College is committed to assisting individuals with disabilities to become full participants in its programs services and activities, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act, Section 504.  The ADA law defines disabilities as—a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities of an individual; a record of such impairments; or being regarded as having such impairments.

Colleges and universities receiving federal financial assistance must not discriminate in recruitment, admission, or treatment of students with disabilities. Students with documented disabilities may request reasonable accommodations to enable them to participate in and benefit from all post-secondary programs and activities.  A reasonable accommodation is a reasonable modification in policies, practices and procedures with no reduction in standards.

Eligibility for ADA Services

It is important that immediately after admittance to Kilian  Community College, the student should bring or send a copy of documentation of disability to the ADA Coordinator.  The Coordinator  will review documentation supplied by licensed professional.  Depending on the type of disability, licensed professionals may include physicians, chiropractors, licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, or professional counselors (LPC).

If the diagnosis was made more than five years prior to the request for accommodation, or if the disability has changed or fluctuated in intensity, an update of the condition may be requested to determine necessary accommodations.

Accommodation Process

It is the student’s responsibility to initiate services by contacting the ADA Coordinator (Room 121) upon admission to the College and/or registration for classes.  The following is a step-by-step guide for completing the accommodations process.

  • The student meets with his/her advisor to register for classes.
  • The student meets with the ADA Coordinator to pick up and complete the “Application for Accommodations” form.
  • The students needs to provide documentation from a health care professional that gives information about the disability, how it affects the student’s participation in the class and the recommended accommodations.
  • Sign a “Release of Information” form, if needed, so documentation can be obtained from another agency.
  • The ADA Coordinator will review the documentation and individually or in consultation with appropriate college personnel determine the accommodation(S) that will be provided to the student.
  • The student meets with the ADA Coordinator and reviews recommended accommodation(s).
  • The student that will receive accommodations will be given an “Accommodations” form to provide to each of their instructors.  The form will list types of accommodations to be made for the student.
  • The student is to take the form to each of their instructors to be signed and the student to then return the form to the ADA Coordinator.
  • If the instructor has any questions in regards to the accommodations, he/she is encouraged not to sign the form and contact the ADA coordinator as soon as possible so a plan can be developed that will meet the student’s need.
  • Students are responsible to contact the ADA Coordinator if they find the accommodations are unworkable or if the accommodations are not implemented in an effective and timely manner.
